About Barclaycard Anywhere

Barclaycard offers a range of contract-based desktop and portable card readers for businesses of all sizes, but also have a tablet and smartphone-compatible product – Barclaycard Anywhere – that is aimed at competing directly with the modern, portable POS market. This matches its rivals in accepting payment from a range of apps, cards and NFC and is a fully pay-as-you-go card reader with fixed transaction costs.

Features

Barclaycard Anywhere matches its opponents in most of the key features, but as it is backed by a bank, customers benefit from more detailed financial records and a customer service experience that has been honed over many more years than the mobile POS market has been operational. In this regard, its direct competitor is PayPal Here.

  • Bluetooth connection that doesn’t drain the battery
  • Payment accepted via Apple and Android payment devices, contactless (NFC) payment, chip and PIN, and chip and signature. Only AMEX not supported amongst the major card providers.
  • Produces live sales reports
  • Adds additional users at the touch of a button
  • Receipts and refunds can be processed digitally and post-dated

Hardware

The Barclaycard Anywhere card reader is compact and designed to be robust, with an OLED display. The desktop card reader options, meanwhile, feature integrated paper receipt printers and wired charging docks, with the desktop reader also offering a separate PIN pad.

Accessories

The Barclaycard Anywhere card reader comes with a USB charging cable, while the desktop models come with wired charging docks.

Sectors

The portable POS reader that Barclaycard offers is aimed at small, mobile businesses such as plumbers, travelling food units and exhibitions, with no sliding scale for fees, which is some of the lowest around.

Tax compliance

All transaction reports can be exported or uploaded the cloud, making Barclaycard Anywhere compatible with new MTD regulations.

Data security

Barclaycard’s POS card reader options all work on the assumption that your business is PCI DSS compliant from levels 1 to 4, depending on sales volumes.

Support

Customer support is available over the phone by calling Barclaycard between 8:30am and 6pm Monday to Friday. As Barclaycard Anywhere and the other card reader options come through a bank, this also means that support is closed on bank holidays.

Costs and fees

The Barclaycard Anywhere reader costs £29 + VAT and the transaction fee is a flat 1.6%, with a 75p refund charge. Meanwhile, the desktop card reader is £15 + VAT per month, or the portable card readers are £20 + VAT. All non-mobile card readers tie you into 18-month contracts, with transaction fees on a sliding scale depending on volume.

Social media

Barclaycard Anywhere doesn’t have its own dedicated social media platform, but Barclaycard as a banking entity, of course, does. You can check them out on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Conclusion

Barclaycard Anywhere offers a modern mobile POS solution to rival the likes of Zettle and is priced at the lower end of the market in terms of transaction fees. Meanwhile, its pay-monthly options are more in direct competition with PayPal Here or some of Epos Now’s complete package solutions.

  1. We can pair easily to Samsung but never finds Iphone which is main phone to be used for sales. We now say we don't accept card payment. Waste of £29 - from John | 23. February 2021
  2. Mines absolutely rubbish. Hardly ever gets a connection takes ages to find the phone. Very poor. Trying to send it back as its off line now and won't even search - from Jacky Hathaway | 24. December 2020
  3. It isn’t the cheapest out there, but it’s easy to use and there is no lock in, which I know some other card reader manufacturers have. I haven’t had any issues so far. - from Henry Dingwall | 14. November 2019
  4. It’s worth mentioning from the outset that you need a Barclays account to use their card reader, but if you do have one, or you plan to get one, you benefit from the customer service and account compatibility of a major bank, which I see as a great benefit. - from Grace M. | 2. October 2019
